9.19.06 Truth or Consequences, NM – Exclusively for Miao, designer Danielle Lesniewski presents her latest line of hand bags, HeadCase. Following up on her previous creations from re-constructed jewelry, hair pieces, purses, t-shirts and re-vamped fashions, HeadCase combines exquisite ladies hats from bygone eras with luxurious fabrics, which become signature handbags that are as utilitarian as they are fine pieces of art. As a child, Danielle Lesniewski remembers treasure hunting for antiques and going to auctions with her mother in upstate New York as well as being kindred spirits with her grandmother, a prolific painter who has exhibited at the Whitney Museum in New York and top galleries. After a post-college stint in sports marketing, Lesniewski moved to Los Angeles and worked with a publishing house and an arts marketing firm. Meanwhile she continued her own painting practice with an interest in fashion and representations of the female form. In 2000, she moved to Manhattan for an artist’s residency – creating a unique environment for the Carlton Arms Hotel. There’s no denying that the events of September 11, 2001 had a serious impact on her decision to change her scenery and seek refuge in the desert. Upon moving to Truth or Consequences in 2002, Lesniewski knew she wanted to create an outlet for her work as she had in NYC. One year later Miao opened as an atelier/gallery on one of the commercial avenues in the quaint burg of Truth or Consequences. Since opening its doors, Miao and Lesniewski have received acclaim in Transmission Magazine (Albuquerque, NM), Santa Fe New Mexican and Sunset Magazine. A founding member of the Covert Craft Operation, a Southern New Mexico women’s collective that brings art to promising young women in the community, and a T or C Fiesta Board Member, Lesniewski contributes her creativity beyond the walls of her studio.
